Manushi Chhillar addresses 30-year age gap between her and Akshay Kumar: “Working with a superstar is good and that you will get a certain amount of visibility”

Posted by on PP in

Manushi Chhillar, the winner of the Miss World title in 2017, made her Bollywood debut in the film Samrat Prithviraj opposite Akshay Kumar, who is nearly 30 years her senior. Unfortunately, the film was met with poor reception. Years later, at 26, Chhillar once again shared the screen with the 56-year-old actor in the recently released action film Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (BMCM). Despite being made on a massive budget and featuring exotic locations, the film failed to impress audiences and make its mark at the box office.

In a recent interview with Zoom, Chhillar addressed the 30-year age gap debate surrounding her casting opposite older stars like Akshay Kumar. She asserted that she doesn’t mind being paired with older actors, as it would only help her garner attention. She said, “There are many facets to this. I can only speak for myself. He (Akshay) is a superstar. Many want to work with him, I want to work with him. We are all fans but I don’t cast for films and there are people who do (that). I am sure that everyone has their reason why they are casting who for which role and I don’t interfere with that.”

She added, “I see what role is being given to me and for me, working with a superstar is good and that you will get a certain amount of visibility and there will be a certain amount of attention attached to it as well,” she added.

Manushi clarified that there wasn’t a romantic pairing in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. She said, “I have really had fun working with him (Akshay). And for my first film, there was an age gap and they wanted to play the whole thing. In this (BMCM), there was no pairing. And it is also fine and I don’t see it as something atrocious or something which shouldn’t have been there.”

She added, “We did songs for marketing. So they had to put two people together for the songs, but that’s pretty much it, which is fine. It wasn’t like a love story anyway.”

“I hope I get to romance younger heroes as well and vice-versa also it happens,” she said.

Meanwhile, Manushi Chhillar will next star in John Abraham starrer Tehran. She was most recently seen in Operation Valentine with Varun Tej. ALSO READ: Manushi Chhillar confirms she was approached for Kiara Advani’s role in Kabir Singh; praises Rashmika Mandanna’s character in Animal

Ira Khan pens a strong note on fear of “being alone, helpless” in new post; husband Nupur Shikhare drops heartwarming response

Through her candid posts, Ira sheds light on her struggles and coping mechanisms, encouraging open conversations about mental well-being. In a recent Instagram post, the star kid bravely addressed her fears and vulnerabilities.

Using a series of slides captioned with yellow hearts, she wrote, "I'm scared. I'm scared of being alone. I'm scared of feeling helpless... The tangible, we can overcome. The fear is endless and as powerful as our imaginations."

“Fear often feels worse than the thing itself. The tangible, we can overcome. The fear is endless and as powerful as our imaginations. I forget that I’m loved by very capable people who will find me if I’m lost. Take care of me if I’m hurt. I forget that I’m a capable person. There’s not much to do about that. Fear has that effect. What helps me is to find someone else (or a song, movie, anything) that either physically makes me feel safe or reminds me of the things I’ve forgotten, giving me hope and patience for this fear to pass. Ideally I do both,” read an excerpt of her post.

Sukhwinder Singh REFUTES Ram Gopal Varma's claims on ‘Jai Ho’ composition: “AR Rahman has composed the song, I have only sung it”

Posted by on PP in

Earlier this week, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma sparked confusion by claiming that singer Sukhwinder Singh composed the Oscar-winning song ‘Jai Ho’ from Slumdog Millionaire, not AR Rahman. However, Sukhwinder has refuted the filmmaker’s claims and credited Rahman for the song's music in an interview with Hindustan Times. He acknowledged singing the iconic track but credited Rahman's role as the composer.

"AR Rahman has composed the song, I have only sung it. Ram Gopal Varma ji koi chhoti hasti toh nahin hain, shayad unhe kuchh galat pata chala hoga," he stated. He clarified that any misinformation Varma might have received was unintentional. Sukhwinder Singh further elaborated on the song's creation process. He revealed that lyricist Gulzar wrote the song, which AR Rahman liked and subsequently composed in Sukhwinder's studio.

Rahman even presented the song to director Subhash Ghai for his film Yuvvraaj, starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. However, Ghai felt the song wasn't a good fit for his vision.

For the unversed, in an interview with Film Companion, RGV recalled meeting when Ghai got upset with Rahman after he found that he hadn’t composed the song. RGV stated that the filmmaker even lashed at the composer and said, “I am paying you crores of rupees as my music director and you are making Sukhwinder make a tune for me. You have the guts to say that in front of me? If I want Sukhwinder, I’ll sign him. Who are you to take my money and make Sukhwinder do the music for me?'”

Meanwhile, AR Rahman is yet to comment on the matter.

Soni Razdan takes a light-hearted jab at Mukesh Khanna's remark on live-in relationships as Zeenat Aman's advice sparks debate: “Can't imagine what would happen if…”

Posted by on PP in

Veteran actress Soni Razdan has taken a lighthearted jab at actor Mukesh Khanna's comments regarding live-in relationships. The debate sparked after actress Zeenat Aman advocated for couples to try live-in arrangements before marriage.

Mukesh Khanna, known for his iconic role as Shaktiman, expressed disapproval of Zeenat Aman's advice. In an interview with Dainik Jagran, he stated that live-in relationships are "unacceptable" in Indian culture and dismissed them as a Western concept. He further questioned the compatibility of couples living together before marriage.

Soni Razdan took to social media (platform unspecified) to respond to Mukesh Khanna's remarks. Her comment, laced with sarcasm, highlighted Khanna's conservative viewpoint. She wrote, "Gosh, can't imagine what would happen if a couple in a live-in relationship doesn't get along. The mind boggles!"

Zeenat Aman's suggestion on live-in relationships garnered mixed reactions from her fellow actors. “This is the same advice I’ve always given my sons, both of whom have had, or are in, a live-in relationship. It just seems logical to me that before two people get their families and the government involved in their equation, they first put their relationship to the ultimate test,” Zeenat wrote in an Instagram post.

A post shared by Zeenat Aman (@thezeenataman)

Actresses Mumtaz and Saira Banu also voiced their opinions against live-in arrangements. While the former called Zeenat’s marriage a “living hell”, the latter told, “Iss baat se main toh sehmat nahi ho sakti hu kabhi bhi (I can never agree with this statement). I would never advocate live-in relationships like that. It’s something unimaginable and unacceptable for me,” in an interview with Hindustan Times.

Coming back to Zeenat, the 72-year-old actress is all set to make a comeback with Bun Tikki alongside Shabana Azmi and Abhay Deol.

35 years of Aamir Khan starrer Raakh: 9 lesser-known facts about the dark crime drama

Posted by on PP in

The phrase ‘multiplex cinema’ came into existence after the emergence of multiplexes in India around the start of the new millennium. These are generally films that don’t provide conventional entertainment as they focus on unconventional stories and are suited more for film festivals. They are also called as ‘arthouse films’. A major characteristic of these films is that it doesn’t contain big stars.

Aamir Khan did one such ‘multiplex’ film when ‘multiplex films’ were not even a thing. He teamed up with filmmaker Aditya Bhattacharya for a film called Raakh, which released in 1989. Along with him, it also had names that later went onto become popular actors – Pankaj Kapoor, Supriya Pathak and Homi Wadia.

As Raakh completes 35 years today, here’s looking at some of its interesting and lesser-known facts.

First film Aamir Khan shot

Aamir Khan made his debut as the main lead with his cousin Mansoor Khan’s Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak along with Juhi Chawla in 1988. The movie along with its music became a runaway success and the two debutant actors became stars. However, Aamir shot Raakh much before QSQT but it was released later.

Reason for not releasing Raakh first

Aamir Khan’s father, Tahir Hussain who was also the producer of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, didn’t want Raakh to be his son’s first film as the main lead. He wanted Aamir to make his debut through a conventional and massy movie instead of an arthouse film like Raakh. Hence, Raakh released a year after QSQT.

Dystopian subject

Raakh takes place in a dystopian world and in a city that is not named. The story is based on a dark period where a young man (Aamir) get smitten by a woman Neeta (Supriya Pathak). However, his world changes, not for the good, when Neeta is raped by a local gangster and he is forced to go on a path of revenge. To say that the film was ahead of its time would be an understatement.

Real names used

In Raakh, Aamir Khan is named Aamir Hussein, which is akin to his real name Mohammed Aamir Hussain Khan. Pankaj Kapoor, who plays a cop, is named P Kapoor. Similarly, actress Naina Balsaver is also named Naina in the movie.

First film for two other greats

Raakh was the first Hindi film for two veteran technicians – cinematographer Santosh Sivan and editor A Sreekar Prasad.

National Awards triumph

Raakh went onto win three National Awards – Best Supporting Actor for Pankaj Kapur, Special Mention for Aamir Khan and Best Editing for A Sreekar Prasad. Winning a National Award so early in his career was quite an achievement for Aamir.

Nuzhat Khan’s contribution

Aamir Khan’s cousin Nuzhat Khan teamed up with Aditya Bhattacharya as one of the two writers of Raakh. She also played the role of Aamir’s younger sister in the movie. She has worked as a costume designer for Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Josh (both directed by his brother Mansoor Khan) and Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, the acting debut for her son Imran Khan.

Aditya Bhattacharya’s filmography

After Raakh, director Aditya Bhattacharya made only four more films in the form of Senso Unico (1999), Dubai Return (2005), Sandokan In Sicilia (2009) and BMW – Bombay’s Most Wanted (2012). He played the role of one of Aamir’s friends in Raakh. He also went onto act in a number of films like Mandi, Rihaee, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Black Friday and Tera Kya Hoga Johnny.

Ahmed Khan’s early days

Choreographer-turned-filmmaker Ahmed Khan played Aamir’s young friend Shaikh in the movie. Before this movie, he had played a child actor in the classic Mr. India (1987).

But his blessings are always going to be with me.”

Shatrughan Sinha on firing incident outside Salman Khan’s house, “Who are these anti-social elements who want to hurt nation’s beloved superstar?”

Posted by on PP in

Shatrughan Sinha has always been very, very close to Salman Khan. When he heard about the gunshots in front of Salman’s home, Shatruji was very disturbed. He said, “My first thought was about the safety of Salman and his family. My second thought was, who are these anti-social elements who want to hurt the nation’s beloved superstar?”

Lest we forget, Salman launched Shatruji’s daughter Sonakshi. “How can I ever forget that? I am forever grateful to Salman for Dabangg. Sonakshi couldn’t have hoped for a better launch,” said the emotional father.

But there is a bond beyond the professional between the two. “Salman and his family, his father the great writer Salim Saab are very close to my heart. When I heard of the incident on Sunday morning, my primary concern was the safety of the family. Salim Saab and Salman are among the pride of our film industry. We as one fraternity should come forward to condemn such a dastardly cowardly act,” said Shatruji angrily.

He feels the safety and wellbeing of the film fraternity should be a priority for the State government. “Iss terah se khule aam aatank phailana (to openly spread terror this way), this is certainly not a healthy sign. I am sure the prayers and blessings of Salman’s fans will always keep him safe and protected.”

Shatruji recalls the terror attack on his friend Rakesh Roshan in the year 2000. “We thought those days of criminal elements trying to intimidate the film industry were over,” he said.

Shoojit Sircar says, “There are many things I would want to change in Vicky Donor, but not much in October”

Posted by on PP in

By a strange coincidence, two of Shoojit Sircar’s finest works were released on the same date. While Vicky Donor was released on April 20, 2012, Shoojit’s October was released five years later on the same date.

Said Shoojit, “Yes, a very happy coincidence. I am happy that I could make both these stories. I didn’t think that film would get so much love. During the pandemic, October actually got a huge surprise following among film lovers. I never got so many beautiful messages before. In Vicky Donor, I am glad that I could stick to the essence of the narrative and didn’t get lost with just comedic gimmicks. It was a difficult taboo subject to handle then. But now it’s a more comfortable theme to tackle.”

Vicky Donor and October are poles apart in theme and treatment. Vicky Donor is original and thoroughly engaging. It makes you feel blessed and blissed. How good it feels to watch a director pick up a pertinent issue and convert it into a perky precocious and endearing rom-com, which is less rom and, ahem, a whole lot of cum. Indeed Vicky Donor is suffused with delectable plus points, not the least of them being debutant Ayushmann Khurana who seems to be born to play Vicky the sperm donor. He has formidable competition in the acting department from Kamlesh Gill and Dolly Ahluwalia, who play his grand mom and mom, and from the redoubtable Annu Kapoor who as the sperm doctor, adds so much to his role and to the film you wonder why he isn't seen more often in our films. Each character is written with a keen for details that go a long way in giving them a life beyond the camera.

In October too Shoojit Sircar understands and empathizes with the pulse of the working class, their fears and anxieties. It could be an abundant sperm count (Vicky Donor) or constipation (Piku). The anxiety never ceases. In October, it is death and mortality that binds the characters in a clasp of compassion, not in any obvious way. The plot is about an obdurate and seemingly obnoxious hotel-management trainee, played with wilful gusto by Varun Dhawan, who decides that the quiet, shy colleague Shiuli (debutante Banita Sandhu) who has gone into a coma has some kind of a bonding with him.

Unsure of that thing we call love, Varun Dhawan’s Dan simply lives on the IDEA of love, extolling its idealism to a point where his existence is defined by one casual 3-worded question that Shiuli asked her colleagues before she slipped into a long coma.

Said Shoojit, “I am glad I got the chance of exploring different genres… and most importantly exploring lives of ordinary people. I love the pace of October…that’s my pace… peaceful.”

Shoojit is in touch with all actors from both the films Ayushmann Khurrana, Yami Gautam, Varun Dhawan and Banita Sandhu. “All the actors are still in touch with me… I repeated my collaboration with many actors from both the films in later films,” he said.

Speaking of his biggest takeaway both the films, Shoojit said, “The biggest takeaway was, sticking to core of the story, and not deviating, and that your integrity in the storytelling will find an audience. There are many things that I would want to change in Vicky Donor. But not much in October… film after film I am learning and trying not to repeat those mistakes.”

About his next film, Shoojit said, “My next is again an ordinary story of an ordinary man. Abhishek Bachchan plays the protagonist.”

Their journey began with friendship. Abhishek and Aishwarya co-starred in films like Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke (2000) and Umrao Jaan (2006). Imran Khan on tackling severe depression; says he was barely capable of functioning: “Did my best to disappear”

Posted by on PP in

After a hiatus of nearly nine years since his last film, Katti Batti in 2015, actor Imran Khan has been making headlines for his active presence on social media. Unlike many actors who gradually fade away from the public eye, Imran has been engaging with his fans, sparking speculation about a potential comeback to the silver screen. His recent revelations about a ‘mental health scare’ and prioritizing his well-being have shed light on the personal struggles behind his absence from the film industry.

In a candid interview with Film Companion, Imran Khan opened up about the pivotal moment that led to his decision to step away from acting. He revealed that a ‘mental health scare’ prompted him to reassess his life and prioritize his well-being over his career. Imran disclosed that this realization dawned on him around 2016-2017, prompting him to make significant changes in his lifestyle and mindset.

Imran Khan's journey of self-discovery began when he confronted the reality that he wasn't ‘healthy, strong, capable,’ as he previously believed. This revelation compelled him to shift his focus towards improving his mental and emotional health. He acknowledged that while being an actor had been his passion and profession, he recognized that it was "optional" compared to the essential aspects of his well-being.

“The week before Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na released, nobody could have given a damn if I walked on the street; the week after it released, suddenly there are people chasing my car,” he said, adding, “A film doesn’t do well, the same industry people who were chomping at the bit to show up and pat me on the back suddenly are like, ‘You are out of season, you are the wrong kind of flavour’.”

Imran Khan added, “In those years, I was just not capable of doing these things. I was barely capable of functioning. When you are tackling deep and severe depression, just getting up in the morning and brushing your teeth and taking a shower is a monumental task.” He also ensured he attended his therapy sessions.

The actor added that he did his best to disappear and wasn’t attached to the fame. “I did my best to disappear. I did not engage via those threads. You know how desperately people cling on to the spotlight, I didn’t. I did exactly the opposite of what you are supposed to do to stay relevant. Yet here we are, and here I am,” he said. EXCLUSIVE: “Shah Rukh Khan jokingly told me, ‘I hate you for not singing 'Bheege Honth Tere' for me!’” – Kunal Ganjwalla

Posted by on PP in

The path-breaking film Murder (2004) completed 20 years on April 2. Emraan Hashmi and Mallika Sherawat became overnight stars and singer Kunal Ganjwalla also benefited hugely from the super-success of this erotic thriller. His song 'Bheege Honth Tere' was a huge chartbuster that was played in every nook and corner of the country. A year later, Kunal sang two more hit songs – the song ‘Kaal Dhamaal’ from Kaal (2005), featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Malaika Arora, and the title track of Salaam Namaste (2005).

Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke with Kunal Ganjawalla recently on the 20th anniversary of Murder. Towards the end, we asked him whether 'Bheege Honth Tere' helped him bag the aforementioned two songs.

Kunal Ganjawalla replied, “I believe it's only popularity that leads to more collaborations and more projects. I also know for a fact that it's limited to that period only and this applies to all whether singers, composers, actors, directors, etc. After that, all of them chart their own path forward.”

Kunal Ganjwalla lent his voice to superstar Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Kaal Dhamaal’. We asked him whether he interacted with him during the making of the song.

Kunal Ganjwalla revealed, “I met Mr Shah Rukh Khan personally during the Zee Award function in London in 2004. He very lovingly hugged me after Asha Bhosle ji gave me the award. He then said jokingly, ‘I hate you for not singing 'Bheege Honth Tere' for me!’”

The talented singer further said, “Later, I started travelling with Mr Shah Rukh Khan for concerts. I would end my part of the concert with 'Bheege Honth Tere' and SRK would make his second entry to join me in singing the song.”

He continued, “I travelled with him until 2009 for many concerts. He is such a gentleman and one of the finest persons and professionals that I’ve had the pleasure of working with. He is truly a king in every way when you’re interacting with him!”

27 Years of Koyla: Shah Rukh Khan immediately agreed to set himself on fire for the crucial climax scene; Rakesh Roshan said “Shah Rukh is a very DARING person; When I saw him on fire, I literally got scared”

Posted by on PP in

Koyla (1997), starring Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit, completed 27 years on April 18. Directed by Rakesh Roshan, the film is memorable for its music, mass moments, virgin locations and performances. The action of the film stood out, especially the shot where SRK, set on fire, runs towards the antagonist, played by Amrish Puri. As Koyla celebrated its 27th anniversary, we bring to you the quotes of Rakesh Roshan and others as they speak about the film’s dangerous stunts in the making video.

Rakesh Roshan said in the video, “Shah Rukh is a very daring person. When I conceived the climax, I went and narrated to him what I had thought of. I told him, ‘I can only do this if you give the shot yourself’. He assured me, ‘I’ll do it’!”

Talking about his experience of filming the money shot, the acclaimed filmmaker confessed, “When I saw him running on fire, I literally got scared.” Cinematographer Sameer Arya then stated in admiration, “He could have died. The man has got a lot of guts.”

The video then cuts to visuals of Shah Rukh Khan falling after giving the shot. The unit members then run towards him and apply a solution and soda to douse the fire. SRK seems a bit distressed with the experience. But soon, he gets back into his trademark humorous mood as he quips, “I can do this stunt with my eyes closed. The problem is keeping my eyes open while doing it!”

Shah Rukh Khan didn’t get injured while giving this dangerous sequence. Instead, he was hurt while giving a simple shot in the song ‘Dekha Tujhe Toh’. Shah Rukh revealed, “It was an ambition in my life that main aisi film karoon jisme frame ruk jaaye aur likha hua aaye ‘This is the scene where Shah Rukh Khan got hurt’!” He is obviously referring to the unforgettable moment in Coolie (1983) when mega star Amitabh Bachchan had a near-fatal accident. SRK continued, “In one shot, I revolve and jump. And then I fell and broke my knee.”

Rakesh Roshan then shared details of how he designed the action with the action team saying, “We spent 20-30 days conceiving the action scenes and then putting them on paper. We had thought of the exact shots that we were going to take. Also, we used to be fully prepared for the next day’s work. Like we’d plan that ‘Today we are going to take 50 shots’. And we used to make sure to take those 50 shots.”

Madhuri Dixit, meanwhile, spoke about standing at the top of the waterfall with Shah Rukh Khan for a crucial sequence, “It was scary to stand at the edge. Just one little step and there would have been a visual of us (Shah Rukh Kher and her) falling into the waterfall!” She, then, also added that the experience was “awesome”.

She even spoke about another dangerous stunt in the film involving Shah Rukh Khan, “The helicopter goes right over his head. For a minute, we thought that he was hit by the chopper.” Deepshikha, who also was a part of the film’s cast, remarked, “If Shah Rukh had not ducked at the right time, he would have been hit.”

Shah Rukh Khan ended his byte on action on a humorous note saying, “If somebody wants me to do those dangerous shots, I would not do them!”

Kareena Kapoor Khan says Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh are yet to thank her for Ram-Leela exit: “I believe in destiny”

Posted by on PP in

Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan recently shared insights into her past decisions, including her choice to step away from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, a move that inadvertently paved the way for Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh's romance.

In a recent interview with BBC Asian Network while discussing her upcoming film Singham Again, which also features Deepika, Ranveer, Tiger Shroff, and Arjun Kapoor, Kareena touched upon the topic of destiny. When asked if Deepika and Ranveer had expressed gratitude for her decision not to do SLB’s film, Kareena responded philosophically, stating, "I believe in destiny, and I believe that whatever is meant to be in your life will happen, through anything. All is written in the stars and everything is not written for everyone."

For the unversed, before Ram Leela, Bhansali had offered Devdas to Kareena Kapoor. In fact, he screen-tested and gave a signing amount to Bebo. However, before the shoot commenced, he replaced her with Aishwarya Rai. Speaking of the same during an interview with India Today, Kareena had said, “He was the one who insisted that I was the ideal actress for his film. Sanjay had signed me for the film, after which I did the photo shoot for him. And then he tells me that he is taking someone else. His movie never inspired me because I’m not cut out to play Paro from any angle. I’m too young to play that role.”

Coming to the present, it seems the time has changed and Kareena might collaborate with Bhansali if offered. During her appearance on Koffee With Karan 8, KJo had asked who among Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan makes a better muse for Bhansali, she said in her wit, “I still have a chance to work with him.”

Speaking of the professional front, Kareena is currently seen in Crew, co-starring Kriti Sanon and Tabu. The film was released on March 29.

The song 'Bheege Honth Tere' stands out – it talks about lovemaking but in an aesthetic manner. Singer Kunal Ganjwalla, who crooned the track, became an overnight sensation with its success. As Murder completed 20 years, the talented singer gave a rare interview to Bollywood Hungama about how he bagged a song, its impact and a lot more. Kunal Ganjawalla was travelling but was kind enough to send his answers to us.

How did you get a chance to be a part of 'Bheege Honth Tere'? I believe you have worked with Anu Malik before... Yes, I have worked with Mr Anu Malik many times since 1998, thanks to Ranjit Barot who introduced me to him and used my voice in most of the music productions. Originally, renowned legendary playback singer Poornima Shrestha introduced me to Mr Malik way back in 1993.

Is it true that Mr KK was the original choice? Wow, that is some news to me. You tell me more about this scoop as this really is some serious info! That said, I definitely know that I wasn’t the original choice by the producers of this movie, as communicated to me by Mr Malik and his assistant Bipin Panchal. I got a call a few days before Diwali of 2003 and was asked if I could come and sing this song on the day of Festival Of Lights and I did. I remember halfway through the recording, Mr Mukesh Bhatt walked into the studio. I was already singing the song and he was wondering who I was and what I was doing singing this song! But Mr Malik whispered into his ears and asked me to continue singing. After the recording was over, Mr Mukesh Bhatt gave me a big hug and said, “A star is born today!” The credit of course goes to Mr Anu Malik and his conviction in me.

Towards the end, you sing in a unique style. Whose idea was it? That was my idea as singing in a head voice was a very cool sonic signature and no one had done so in Bollywood then. However, it’s been a regular thing in the west

Did you have apprehensions about the lyrics? Yes, I had some serious apprehensions about the lyrics and I was seriously worried about my career being over before it started! Everything was happening so quickly; Mr Malik taught me the tune and made me write the lyrics all in about 20 minutes. I couldn’t even express my fear as Mr Malik was saying “Kunal, go quickly on the mic and just kill the song. Aag laga de. Go, go, go!” I asked the God Almighty to help me sing this song and save me. I truly surrendered for the first time in my life to GOD without any human effort whatsoever. This wasn’t something that I had ever asked the Lord in my wildest dreams (laughs)! But God works in mysterious ways as they say. What seemed like the scariest day turned out to be the biggest blessing so far in my life (smiles).

If you don't mind me asking, how much were you paid to sing the song? Well, let me put it this way - I was paid what Mr Anu Malik always paid me. Also, I didn’t really think my voice was going to be retained; so, everything was a bonus at the end of it all.

Do you remember how the song was received by the aam junta back then? It was just something I never expected. I had gone to Pune for the musical launch of a Rajshri film, Uuf Kya Jaadoo Mohabbat Hai (2004), in which I had sung three songs for Sandesh Shandilya, who is a very dear composer friend. I remember Rajat Barjatya, Sooraj ji, Sandesh bhai, Sunidhi Chauhan and I were a part of the press conference. The press didn’t ask me questions because obviously, I was inconsequential in that gathering of renowned people. But as the press meet was winding up, suddenly one journalist asked, “Are you Kunal Ganjawalla? Your new song has become a rage”! I looked left and right and said “Yes, I am Kunal”. Honestly, I had no clue what song he was talking about because it was about 5 months since the recording. Also, I had lived with the song for not more than half an hour during the recording.

Then we visited Planet M and I was asked to sing the song as soon as I entered the store. I couldn’t remember the lyrics; hence, I asked them to play the song and requested that I sing along! I know it was a little awkward but it saved me.

In these 20 years, a lot of people have come up and told me how they loved it. I’ve had so many young mothers at airports and holiday destinations tell me that their babies sleep to this song! So many couples tell me that my song was a rage when they got hitched. Also, I’ve had elderly couples walk up to me and say they absolutely love the song just like they’ve loved some timeless classic songs of the golden era. What more could anyone ever ask for? (smiles)

I remember reading in the Filmfare Awards special issue that you hid from your partner that you sang this song. They found out after they heard it at some roadside stall. Could you please tell us this story? (Amazed) You’ve actually scooped most of the info from the 2 ½ interviews I’ve done to date by choice! Like I had said, I was apprehensive about the lyrics. The song became a rage and started playing everywhere. It obviously played around our condos too. One day, my wife heard it and asked me, “What is this song that you have sung?”! I promptly said, “That’s not me” (laughs). I then quickly went to a music store. I didn’t know which film the song was for and hence, asked the staffer, “Which movie soundtrack does 'Bheege Honth Tere' feature in?”

When I saw the cover of the soundtrack on the CD, I was like, “Oh My God”! I thought that was going to be the end of my career before it started. So, I hid it right at the back of the CD rack at home. However, it started playing back-to-back all around and my life changed forever!

This song made Emraan Hashmi a star. Did he ever thank you or praise you? I’ve met Emraan only a few times and every time, he came across as a gentleman. Yes, he did become famous with this film just like Mallika Sherawat, director Anurag Basu and myself. I don’t watch television that much or read film magazines. So, I don’t know whether he praised or thanked me. But I guess the respect we have for each other is mutual.

You got a Golden Filmfare statue since it was the 50th edition of the awards. That must have given you a high, isn't it? Yes, it was quite surreal to be at the 50th Filmfare Awards and to see so many yesteryear luminaries present there was such a thrill. I won two Golden Filmfare Awards on the same historic night as a Playback Singer and the R D Burman Award for Best New Talent. I was told that it was rare and that it hadn’t happened before. It was beyond my imagination to have won the Best Playback Singer Award that night as Udit Narayan ji was nominated for 2 songs and my brother Sonu Nigam was nominated for 3 songs. So, it was like God’s grace all the way.

Imran Khan is “glad” that his spy series with Hotstar got shelved: “I don't want to play a character who solves problems with a gun”

Posted by on PP in

Actor Imran Khan recently discussed his relief over the cancellation of a spy series project with Disney+ Hotstar. Explaining the same, he shed light on his aversion to roles that glorify violence. The series, helmed by filmmaker Abbas Tyrewala, was shelved following Hotstar's acquisition by Jio last year, a decision Imran Khan seems content with.

In a candid conversation with Film Companion, Imran expressed his satisfaction with the project's demise, stating, "All things said and done, I am kind of glad that ended up not coming together." When probed further by host Anupama Chopra, Imran elaborated on his reluctance to portray characters reliant on firearms to resolve conflicts, stating, "I don't want to play a character who solves problems with a gun."

The actor went on to explain his discomfort with the recent trend in cinema that glorifies violence without acknowledging its consequences, highlighting a pervasive glamorization and fetishization of brutality. Imran said, “There is glamorization and a fetishization, sexualization, of violence that makes me uncomfortable.”

He further added, “There is a way to portray violence and this is not a morality thing. Violence and action is a language within cinema and when we portray in films there is a way to do it where you feel the weight of it.” Referencing Todd Phillips' acclaimed film Joker, Imran underscored the importance of evoking a sense of horror and consequence in violent scenes, contrasting it with the unsettling trend of portraying violence as stylish and appealing.

To conclude, he said, “We've started making films where heroes will go and boom boom boom shoot seven people in the heads and their heads would explode to music. They make it cool and sexy and it makes me uncomfortable.”

Imran was last seen in Katti Batti, starring Kangana Ranaut, which was released in 2015.

Sonali Bendre recalls becoming a "caricature" in Duplicate: “Sometimes you do things for that paycheck”

Posted by on PP in

Actress Sonali Bendre is gearing up for the second season of her Zee5 series The Broken News. In a recent interview with IndiaToday.in, Bendre looked back on her filmography, discussing a project that left a significant mark on her career - the 1998 film Duplicate.

Duplicate, co-starring Shah Rukh Khan in a double role alongside Juhi Chawla, presented Sonali with an opportunity to portray a complex character. "I was approached to play a grey character," she said, expressing her initial excitement about the challenge. "We started preparing for the role and shooting accordingly, but as things progressed, I felt I became a caricature rather than the nuanced character I envisioned."

Sonali’s experience on Duplicate offered valuable lessons. "Every time a Duplicate song is played and people mention the film, the thing that I remember the most is the fact that how much a story can get de-railed and how much you can start with something and where it goes," she explained. "For me, that was a huge learning experience. As time goes by, you start thinking whether I misinterpreted something or it was the other way around," she added further.

Concluding her point, Sonali asserted, “But then, as you go forward, sometimes you do things for that paycheck, but other than that, in my second innings, I don't want to be slotted and boxed, and I want to do characters that break this stereotype."

Speaking of The Broken News, it also stars Jaideep Ahlawat, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Jay Upadhyay, Indraneil Sengupta, Taaruk Raina, Aakash Khurana and Kiran Kumar. The second season of the show will start streaming on the OTT platform from May 3 onwards.

Imran Khan speaks on leaving Bollywood after Katti Batti debacle: “It was kind of a process”

Posted by on PP in

Bollywood actor Imran Khan, last seen in the 2015 film Katti Batti, has shed light on his decision to leave the industry. In a candid interview with Film Companion, Imran discussed the disconnect he felt between his passion for films and the industry's focus on commercial success.

The actor highlighted the importance of box office figures and financial gains within the film industry. He expressed his discomfort with the ecosystem surrounding actors, where aspects like PR, management, and even minor appearances are evaluated through a purely monetary lens. This constant focus on money, he felt, overshadowed the artistic aspects of filmmaking.

While acknowledging the financial security his film career provided, the actor revealed that the failure of Katti Batti wasn't the sole trigger for his exit. It was a gradual process. He stated, "I never said, ‘Okay, on this day, I’m done, I quit.’  It was kind of a process of a week becoming a month, a month becoming three and becoming a year, and a year becoming two where I said, ‘Okay, I won’t do this because my heart’s not in it.”

As the conversation progressed further, Imran spoke about how building the financial security from his film career allowed him to explore other paths in life.  He elaborated, "Effectively I spent my 20s, working and building and setting up a career. In my 30s, that ended up not being the thing that I felt like focusing on. Life took me in another direction. Effectively these past 10 years I have spent kind of grappling with the larger questions of who am I, what do I want to do, what do I want to be. A series of life circumstances led me to a place where I was not getting the fulfilment.”

Imran is best known for Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na and Delhi Belly. Post his exit from the industry, he refrained from giving interviews. However, recently, he started interacting with his fans through social media. His Instagram feed is filled with throwback posts from the sets of his film, Reportedly, he is all set to make a comeback.

Kundali Bhagya: Shakti Anand and Paras Kalnawat reveal shooting an action sequence in one take; say, “It's a great feeling when you manage to pull off a difficult scene in one go”

Posted by on PP in

Zee TV's Kundali Bhagya has been keeping the audience glued to their television screens for over seven years, with an interesting storyline and high-octane drama. In the recent episodes, the viewers got to watch how Preeta (Shraddha Arya) is trying to save Kavya (Mrinal Navell) from Varun (Ashish Trivedi) by exposing his truth of already being married in front of everyone. However, one thing leads to another, and Rajveer (Paras Kalnawat) ends up getting shot by a bullet, and Papa Karan (Shakti Anand) rushes him to the hospital on a handcart.

At the wedding, as a couple of goons try to harm Karan and Preeta, Rajveer Luthra ends up saving them by taking the bullet himself and getting stabbed by one of the goons. In order to save Rajveer, Karan along with Preeta and Palki rush to the hospital, but unfortunately, their car breaks down, which leads to Karan without further ado, carrying Rajveer on a handcart. While Karan is heartbroken and is trying his best to save his son, shooting for the same sequence wasn't very easy, as Shakti Anand had to push the cart with Paras Kalnawat lying on it. Shakti not only nailed the sequence but also shot the scene in one go.

Speaking about the sequence, Shakti said, “I believe in giving 100% to whatever I do, be it in my personal life or professional. Recently, I shot for a scene where I had to push a handcart with Paras lying on top of it as he was shot by a couple of goons at a wedding function. It was very much a father-son moment, and the whole family coming together. The cart was not only very heavy, it was even more challenging as I had to push it for quite a while. However, after discussing it with my creative team and other co-stars, I felt confident that I could do it without any support. And I did and it got okayed in just one take! As an actor, it's a great feeling when you manage to pull off a difficult scene in one go. It was a truly satisfying experience."

While Shakti is excited about pulling off this scene in one shot, it will be interesting to watch how Preeta, Karan and Palki will save Rajveer. Speaking of the show, Kundali Bhagya airs every day at 9:30 pm, only on Zee TV.

When Kajol gave Karan Johar filmmaking lessons on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal

Posted by on PP in

Remember when best friends Kajol and Karan Johar were seen together on the popular show Rendezvous with Simi Garewal in 2001? However, you may not recall the scene in which Kajol taught Karan how to make films.

A behind-the-scenes footage of the talk show is currently circulating on social media. Karan is seen in a purple suit and Kajol in a maroon salwar suit. They are sitting next to each other opposite the host and veteran actress Simi Garewal.

In the video, Karan is seen instructing Kajol to put her hair on the other side of her neck. But Kajol says that her microphone is on that side. When Karan doesn’t get it and insists on it, she tells him firmly that the hair will damage the sound. She also cynically refers to him as a “brain surgeon” and questions how he became a filmmaker. Karan immediately responds with the customary wit, “Television is not my medium.”

Kajol and Karan became friends on the sets of Aditya Chopra's 1995 directorial debut, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge where she played the lead, and he worked as an assistant director and supporting actor. She then appeared in his 1998 directorial debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. They reunited for two more hit films, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) and My Name Is Khan (2010).

Manoj Bajpayee says, "Conveyance allowance was our biggest support” as he recalls early days in industry

Posted by on PP in

Critically acclaimed actor Manoj Bajpayee recently offered a glimpse into his early days in the entertainment industry, highlighting the financial struggles faced by aspiring actors. During a promotional interview for his upcoming film Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout, Bajpayee spoke with Cyrus Broacha about the importance of "conveyance allowance" in his early career.

"Back then, salaries were already low," Bajpayee shared. "Our biggest support used to be conveyance. We used to get Rs 150 and we used to think and plan what we would do with that Rs 150."  When asked if this practice still exists, Manoj chuckled and responded, "Sadly, it's not there anymore."  He further elaborated that actors used to receive reimbursement for petrol even when using their own vehicles, a perk that is also no longer offered. "Now they don't even give that," he concluded.

Speaking of the professional front, as mentioned above, Manoj is currently seen in the Zee5 film Silence 2, alongside actor Prachi Desai. Bollywood Hungama has given 2.5 stars out of 5 stating that the film “suffers due to the length and certain loose ends.” Besides Manoj, the film also stars Prachi Desai.

Meanwhile, Manoj will be next seen in Bhaiyya Ji. The film, directed by Apoorv Singh Karki, is slated to release on May 24.

The actor along with many B-town celebs, attended the much popular Diljit Dosanjh’s concert, where he was captured by the paparazzi present to cover the event. This sparked speculations about Rao going under the knife and reacting to the same, Rao told Bollywood Hungama that he had got fillers done under his chin, albeit eight years ago.

During a recent interview, not only did Rajkummar Rao assert that he hasn’t done any plastic surgery recently but also maintained that the photo doing the rounds is just a bad click and that skin isn’t as flawless as shown in the picture. He said, “I have not done any plastic surgery guys. It is just a bad photo. That is just a touch-up photo. I wish I had such clean and flawless skin because it looks like that. I was not wearing any makeup. But I must say it looks weird even for me. It was just a bad moment caught on camera. I have not done any plastic surgery”.

In the same interaction with Bollywood Hungama, however, Rajkummar recalled doing some filler work about half a decade ago. He continued, “Having said that, about eight years ago, I did some filler work on my chin because I wanted to look confident. My dermatologist suggested it and I did. Do I feel confident after that? Yes. Have I done better films after that. It has changed the perception. Acting is a visual media. I am not against it. If somebody wants to boost their confidence and the science is available, then why not.” However, he also added, “But no to plastic surgery. It is too expensive and time-consuming.”

Pyaar Ka Pehla Naam Radha Mohan: Manit Joura aka Yug unveils a never-seen-before side of his character as he changes from a loving and sensitive husband to toxic and controlling

Posted by on PP in

After its recent seven-year leap, the storyline of Pyaar Ka Pehla Naam Radha Mohan has been steering into uncharted territories for Radha and Mohan, played by Neeharika Roy and Shabir Ahluwalia, respectively.  The star-crossed lovers are no longer together as Radha is seen in an all-new avatar as Radhika Kohli who lives in South Delhi along with her son Manan and husband Yug Kohli (played by Manit Joura) in a world detached and distant from Mohan’s reality. Radha’s husband Yug, who was once a green flag, has been showcasing his true colors which is the complete opposite of what was being portrayed.

In the recent episodes, viewers have been noticing a marked change in Yug’s behaviour though! From a loving, caring husband to a totally unhinged person, leaving viewers worried for Radha. While he initially came off as a ‘green flag’, Yug has begun demonstrating streaks of controlling behaviour, possessiveness and toxic chauvinism. Speaking about the transition of his character, Manit Joura says, “Playing such a character is never easy. It calls for a lot of preparation to portray the extreme mood swings and intensity of such a person.”

The actor has been pulling out all the stops to ensure an authentic portrayal of this complex character and he continued, "It is thrilling for an actor to portray such a dynamic and unpredictable role brimming with intense complexities, someone who fiercely safeguards his wife yet veers dangerously into the territory of over-possession. I have always played positive ‘good guy’ roles throughout my career, so the opportunity to delve into a role as distinctive and unconventional as this one fills me with immense excitement. As an avid reader, I've delved deeply into the intricacies of human psychology and this has helped me play the role with nuance. I have been getting so many messages from my fans on how they have never seen me in this avatar before, and I can’t wait for them to watch everything that Yug is capable of in the upcoming episodes.”

With some untold secrets, interesting twists as well as exciting revelations in the coming weeks, Pyaar Ka Pehla Naam Radha Mohan is all set to entertain viewers every day at 8 pm, only on Zee TV.

Shaimak Davar reveals how Shah Rukh Khan convinced him to work in Dil To Pagal Hai

Posted by on PP in

Shaimak Devar, the well known Bollywood choreographer, rose to prominence in 1997 with Yash Chopra’s Dil Toh Pagal Hai¸ which included an innovative dance form with western influences. It propelled him to the forefront. In a recent interview, Shaimak stated that Shah Rukh Khan persuaded him to work on the film. He stated that Yash Chopra had earlier given him a role in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, but he declined because he was concerned whether his dancing style would fit Hindi cinema.

He said that Yash Chopra asked him to work on Dil Toh Pagal Hai, and Shah Rukh Khan was the one who persuaded him to sign the film. He claimed that SRK’S wife Gauri Khan, used to take dance classes from him and the actor would pick her up. During that time, SRK told him, “There is a movie coming out, and he wants me to do it.” Additionally, Shaimak was asked to have a meal with SRK. Shiaman said that SRK asked him to perform in Dil To Pagal Hai. “He persuaded me by saying they wanted my style of dance,” said Shiamak.

Shaimak continued, “Frankly speaking, if Shah Rukh hadn’t persuaded me, I am confident I would not have done Dil To Pagal Hai either. Because my dance style was quite different. It was western, but Yash (Chopra) uncle believed in me, and SRK encouraged me further. So, I'm overjoyed that I did the movie.”

Shaimak has collaborated with some of the biggest personalities in the industry, including Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Dhoom 2 and Anushka Sharma and Shah Rukh Khan in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

Shaimak Davar recently choreographed Ishaan Khatter and Wamiqa Gabbi in Vishal Bhradwaj's short musical Fursat. The film centred on the topic of time travel.

EXCLUSIVE: “It was a party to have Vidya Balan and Pratik Gandhi on set of Do Aur Do Pyaar,” says Shirsha Guha Thakurta

Posted by on PP in

Shirsha Guha Thakurta’s Do Aur Do Pyaar has made heads turn because of its unusual and fresh pairing of Vidya Balan and Pratik Gandhi. The filmmaker said in an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama that she is blessed to have them together in her first feature film. “Of course, as actors, I couldn’t have asked for anything better because they are both fantastic performers, as you would know. Both Vidya and Pratik are very different, but they are so amazing and amazing together. It was like a pure treat. It was like a party to have them on set. It takes your direction to another level,” she said.

Do Aur Do Pyaar is an official Hindi remake of the American film The Lovers (2017). “The basic premise came from that film,” said Shirsha. “And then we, of course, changed it to suit it to our society and country. For me, this is also a very Bombay film. The problems are very urban city problems. So, it’s a very Bombay specific story. The city is actually the fifth character in the film. It’s about a couple struggling with a dead marriage and they are cheating on each other. And that’s when they rediscover their old spark and start cheating on their current lovers (Ileana D’Cruz and Sendhil Ramamurthy). Basically, chaos, comedy and heartbreak ensures.”

When asked about the reason for naming the film so, she said, “It is a take on the cyclical nature of modern love. So, love is no longer a simple binary equation. Hence, Do Aur Do Pyaar. Two and two doesn’t always add to four. Of course, you can perceive it in various ways. But this is what I think is the meaning of the name. It has four interconnected lives suddenly at a crossroads.”

Shirsha added that Vidya and Pratik were her first choices always. “Basically, we wanted honesty more than anything else. We wanted the characters to look honest. Vidya and Pratik were the first people we had gone to. Vidya liked it and said okay. And then we were actually writing the script before she actually gave a yes. She wanted to see the final bound script. But we didn’t work on it together. She used to give her feedback on what she liked and what she doesn’t.”

Shirsha did an interesting exercise to see if Vidya and Pratik would appear good together in their respective roles. “Once she came on board, we cast Pratik,” she said. “We had some meetings together. We had never seen them together, right? So, we met them separately and met them together. Just over coffee; not talking about the film; nothing. Just to see how these two people look (together), of course knowing that we had a casting thing in mind. All got along and then Pratik said yes.”

Do Aur Do Pyaar is releasing in theatres on April 19. When prodded about her box office expectations, Shirsha said, “There is no way to even know whether the person in front of me has liked it or not. I just hope they liked it. There is no way for me to predict the box office. So, I don’t think about it, to be honest. I just hope it does well. At the end of the day, it is business, so it needs to make its money, so that we can make more of such films.”

Shirsha also believes that hero-centric films shouldn’t be the only ones succeeding at the box office. “I also want it to do well because we don’t want just one type of film to work in theatres. Then we will only make one type of films. We need to have a range. As an industry, we just can’t always do action films and big hero-driven films. It’s not just about larger-than-life stories. It’s also about everyday life and everyday narrative. There should be a place for everything. I just hope that there is a place for this type of storytelling also. So, I hope it works at the box office.”
